Make replacement of parting insert easier New system Smart lock

Here is a new parting/grooving tool that allows both workability and longer tool life.

Parting/grooving holder which is able to clamp screw from the side.
Checking workability and performance of new clamping system by durability test.

Improving workability in small space for tool change such as Swiss-style automatic lathes directly allow to improve productivity.

1.Outline
It is especially important to improve the workability of tool replacement for automatic lathes and lathes that have small space for tool change.

Improve productivity and save investment cost are available by continuing production without machine stopping as much as possible.

For the external turning holder, the workability and layout freedom have been improved by a back clamping. Clamp rigidity is important for parting and grooving tools due to the machining characteristics, so the clamp method from above has been used for dog-bone type.
A new product that can clamp the insert from the side has been introduced from Walter. Here is the test result for durability to check the workability and clamp rigidity.

2.Comparing the workability between conventional clamping and claming by Smart lock
  • Previously
    Clamping from above

  • Limited space for changing the tools by L-type wrench

Since the distance to the adjacent tool is close and the clamp screw is difficult to see, it is difficult to replace the insert. It is usually removing the holder itself and change the tools outside the machine.

  • Clamping from the side by a new product, Smart lock

  • Easy to see the clamp screw and excellent warkability

It can be clamped from the opposite side with the same holder regardless of right-handed or left-handed.
It is also able to use with a holder reversed.

3.Test report: Smart lock vs. conventional clamping from above
  • Machine
    Mazak QT-compact200MY Water-soluble cutting oil

  • Workpiece material: S45C
    Workpiece size: Φ32 diameter x 120mm length

Testing under machining conditions expecting automatic lathes and small-diameter workpieces which tends to be bent.

Vc=100m/min, f=0.1mm/rev
2mm width insert

Result: Walter product was stable machining and had no problem with 850 times parting.
Product of Japanese manufacturer A got occurred large chipping.

  • Walter
    Holder:G4014-P

  • Japanese manufacturer A
Holder with internal coolant for automatic lathes
    Low cutting force insert

Parting process for 675 times each

Rake face wear condition
  • Walter
    After 675 times parting

  • Japanese manufacturer A
    After 675 times parting

Flank wear condition
  • Walter
    After 675 times parting

The surface color changed a little, but edge wear is less.
  • Japanese manufacturer A
    After 675 times parting

    No big difference

Additional parting process for 850 times each

Rake face wear condition
  • Walter
    After 850 times parting

No big difference from at the time of 675 times
  • Japanese manufacturer A
    After 850 times parting

    Right corner get damaged
Flank wear condition
  • Walter
    After 850 times parting

It is easily seen the surface color change due to its coating, but there are no remarkable wear or welding.
  • Japanese manufacturer A
    After 850 times parting

The corner get damaged and welded.
